There’s hardly anything more annoying than unsolicited mail from a mailing list.
Even if we tell the deliverer we want to stop unwanted mail, sometimes it feels like our request gets lost in the ether. Either that, or we get ignored.
Well, not anymore you won’t. Keep reading to find out how to refuse mail and remove your name from a mailing list.
Don’t Open It
If you try to refuse mail after you’ve opened the letter or package, it won’t work. You cannot simply reseal it, either.
Instead, mark the unopened mailpiece as “Refused” and return it to the sender. Then, get a new envelope or container, write the address of the sender, and return it.
How to Decline USPS Packages
USPS delivers over 400 million pieces of mail every day. Sooner or later, you’re bound to receive something you wish you hadn’t.
Declining packages from USPS is easy in most cases, no matter the reason. Simply notify the post office.
You can do this when the package has arrived or when it’s on the way. They’ll make sure the package doesn’t reach you if it’s already been sent.
If the package has already shown up on your doorstep, ask the delivery person to take it back. As long as you don’t sign the receipt, this should work.
If the package arrived while you were not at home, you can still send it back. Just write “Refused” on the unopened package, put it in your mailbox, and let your mail carrier know.
How to Remove Your Name From a Mailing List
Perhaps the most annoying mail we receive is promotional material or ads from retailers, especially if we don’t even shop there.
For a small fee, DMAchoice is a service that allows you to remove your name from a mailing list. DMAchoice doesn’t eliminate you from every mailing list, but you will see a drastic difference.
Now, let’s say you’ve recently moved. For a while, you’ll probably get the mail from the previous tenant or homeowner. To redirect this mail to the intended recipient, write “Not at this address” on the envelope and send it out.
