5 Fun Things to Do in Kochi

September 27, 2021 by admin Leave a Comment

Kochi, located in the Indian state of Kerala, is a magnificent holiday destination. You can immerse in its natural splendor or explore the intriguing colonial legacy. There is so much to do here that a three or four-day vacay might feel short. So today, we bring you a list of the top attractions in Kochi that you must explore on your trip. Without any further ado, let us check these out.

Mattancherry Palace

Also known as Dutch Palace, Mattancherry Palace is, in fact, built by the Portuguese. It was constructed in 1555 as a gift to King Veera Kerala Varma in order to build trading relations with his kingdom. The palace’s walls are adorned with murals of Hindu gods and goddesses. In the coronation hall, you will come across life-size statues of the erstwhile rules of Kochi.

Paradesi Synagogue

Adjacent to Mattancherry Palace is Paradesi Synagogue, considered by many to be the oldest in the Commonwealth. It was constructed in 1568 on the land given by the king of Cochin. Rare antiques are displayed in its vast main hall. If you are a history buff, then book online flights and hotels right away and get ready to dive deep into the colonial heritage of Kochi.

Marine Drive

One of the best places in Kochi to hang out, Marine Drive commands stunning views of the Kochi harbor. Although you can visit it any time of the day, an evening trip will allow you to capture the harbor illuminated with vibrant lights. It is a great place for a romantic walk with your better half. Numerous shopping and dining spots are also located in the vicinity, where you can partake in some retail therapy and enjoy delicious food.

Jew Town

If the idea behind your Kochi trip is to explore the city’s heritage, then a trip to Jew Town must be a part of your itinerary. The old-world charm of this place, visible in various heritage buildings, will leave you spellbound. There are seemingly countless small shops here selling antique and vintage collectibles. It is also a great spot to buy spices that South India is so famous for.

Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi is a fascinating seaside area that is famed for its Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial architecture. Do not miss to visit St. Francis Church, the original burial site of the renowned explorer Vasco da Gama – the first European to arrive in India by sea. Hip cafes and lavish eateries will make your visit even more fun and exciting.

While these are the top attractions in Kochi, some others you can visit are Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Indo-Portuguese Museum, Santa Cruz Basilica and Princess Street.
