Choosing the Right Size of Tiles for Your Floor

Choosing the Right Size of Tiles for Your Floor

Are you planning on installing a new set of tile floors in your home? If so, you may be wondering what size to choose. There are many different sizes and shapes of tiles available, so it can be difficult to decide which one is right for your floor.

In this article, we will discuss the different factors you should consider when choosing the size of tiles you need. After reading this, you’ll probably find yourself immediately looking for the best floor tiles available.

Intended Use

Define what you need the tiles for. For instance, a tiled bathroom floor might require larger square or rectangular tiles than a kitchen countertop since it will be exposed to water more frequently.

Here’s another example: If your goal is to go for a minimalist look for your room, you may be better off with larger grey tiles. On the other hand, you may need smaller and lighter-coloured (white, especially) tiles if you have a narrow room. In the end, it’s what you will be using the tiles for that may spell the difference.

Available Space

Consider how much space you have available in your room and what type of tile would fit best within this area. If the room is small enough that only two or three different-sized tiles could be used without them looking out of place, then choose one size over another based on which looks better aesthetically speaking (i.e., larger ones look better when placed next to each other).

Conversely, if there’s lots of open flooring room, then go for whatever shape works well with your design scheme and doesn’t limit creativity too much—don’t let yourself get boxed into using rectangular ones just because they happen to be readily available at your local home improvement store.

Maintenance

Larger tiles tend to be easier to keep clean and maintain as there are fewer grout lines, which can accumulate dirt and bacteria over time. However, if you have children or pets that like to run around on the floor, then you may want to choose a smaller tile size so that they won’t just slide around on the surface, which can be dangerous.

In general, it is always best to overestimate the amount of space you have available when choosing tile size. This way, you won’t end up with too many (or too few) leftover tiles after installation. If you do find yourself running out of room, consider going for larger tiles and cutting them down to size as needed.

The bottom line is this: There is no one size fits all answer when it comes to choosing the right tiles for your floor. It really depends on the individual needs and preferences of each person. But by following the simple tips mentioned above, you should be able to make an informed decision that will result in a beautiful and long-lasting tile flooring installation!

Don’t forget to prep your floor before installation!

Prep your floor before installation by sweeping and mopping. If the floor is dirty or has a lot of debris, use a cleaner to get it as clean as possible before installing your tiles. Make sure that the subfloor is also in good condition and free from any moisture prior to installation (you can do this by using a moisture metre).

Measure the area you plan on tiling and purchase enough tiles to cover this surface (plus an additional five percent). This will help prevent running out of tiles during installation, which can be frustrating and can result in having to make another trip to the home improvement store.
